FAQs

Q: So, what is the Avenue?
A: Well an avenue is like a street but different… THE Avenue is a church plant in Louisville, KY. We started in early 2010 with the hope and the burden to reach out to the Old Louisville community as well as the University of Louisville.

Q: A church huh? So what are you guys all about then?
A: We want to be a community that lives like Jesus, changed by Him and working to change the city for His glory.

Q: Whoa, a community? Are you sure you aren’t a cult?
A: LOL, no we are not a cult. Cults aren’t really communities… they are weird things that no one understands. A real community is a body of people who are united by something bigger than they are and together pursue that thing. At the Avenue we are united on Jesus and we want to be a community because we believe that Jesus called his people to live, function and work together to bring about His kingdom. We do some pretty weird stuff sometimes, like communion and prayer but we do it in response to Jesus and who He has called us to be.

Q: Well that’s cool I guess… do I have to do anything to join this community?
A: Yes, shave your head… just kidding. We would love for you to come and see what we are up to. Check it out anytime you want, ask some more questions and discover what the Avenue is really all about. We want people to understand what they are getting into when they make this their church home, so we encourage you to try it out and if you decide that this is the community for you we can talk about what that looks like.

Q: Okay, that sounds good… what should I wear?
A: Clothing.

Q: Haha, good one… So if you guys just started this church out of nothing one day, who pays for all of this?
A: That’s a good question…. But seriously, God called us to plant this church and as crazy as it sounds we depend on God to pay the bills. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization; we depend on charitable donations that we gain through partnerships with individuals and organizations. We also depend on the tithes and offerings of the people who are a part of this church.

Q: Wow, church planting sounds hard… why would you do that in a town that has soooo many other churches?
A: Because they are all wrong and we aren’t… haha, I’m joking again. We love other churches in Louisville and believe whole-heartedly in what they are doing. However, we also believe there are a whole lot of broken people out there that need to know Jesus and it takes a major effort to reach them all. The Old Louisville and UofL area is a place where a lot of broken people live and work… we felt a burden to come to them in a way no one else was.

Q: But wait, if you want to reach UofL does that mean you are a campus ministry?
A: Not exactly, we love campus and we want to be active and involved on campus, but we also want to be active and involved off campus. Our focus is Old Louisville and everyone within it. So we get the privilege of working with lots of college students as well as the people that live around campus in the neighborhoods of Old Louisville.

Q: Oh by the way, I have a kid… should I leave him/her at home?
A: NO WAY! We love kids; in fact we have a whole team of volunteers that would love nothing more than to hang out with your children. We provide childcare for newborns to elementary age and when we say childcare we mean we really care about your children, they learn about Jesus just like you do. All of our childcare workers have been trained and empowered to teach God’s word to your kids in relevant and fun ways. Have a kid over elementary age? Well leave them at home… just kidding! We would love your middle school and high school aged kids to feel welcomed and encouraged to come to our worship services because we think it’s important for them to experience what we are doing as well.

Q: Wow, this really sounds like quite an experience…
A: Please state that in the form of a question.

Q: Is this quite an experience?
A: Yes.
